Since Gears of War released 10 years ago, the series has become the stuff of legend. The original game catapulted the third-person cover mechanic into popular stardom, and Gears of War 2 and 3 refined and optimized the gameplay even further, ramping up the intensity each time. In 2013, Gears of War: Judgement went live, and it served as a prequel to the series. Each of the games took a bold, unrelenting stance towards maintaining gut-wrenching, bloody combat from start to finish. You could dart back and forth behind the safety of obstacles, peppering your opponents from afar, or you could charge into close range, giving your enemy the business-end of your Lancer assault rifle's underslung chainsaw. Every battle was a wonderful symphony of gore and bullets, punctuated by moments of brutal melees.

The first Gears of War began on the war-torn planet of Sera, where monstrous, subterranean entities called Locusts ravished the human population. Amidst the chaos, Marcus Fenix and his best friend Dom Santiago led their Delta Team into the heart of the enemy to plant a powerful bomb to severely hinder the Locust threat. While somewhat successful, the Locust survived. The story continued in Gears of War 2, where the Locust hatched a plan to sink every populated city on the globe. Marcus Fenix once again took command of Delta Squad with Dom at his side, driving onward into the Locust-controlled tunnels of Sera to exterminate them. After discovering an internal battle between the Locust and the Lambent (a splinter species of Locust mutated by Imulsion, an unstable substance used as fuel), Delta Squad grimly decided to detonate the plateau of Jacinto (one of the last thriving human outposts) to destroy both opposing factions in one fell swoop.
